10 • 10 • 10 Weighing The Consequences of Poor Decisions
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was a way to pull back the reins in our mind and prevent what could become a negative action from happening in the first place? I believe there is.
In previous stories, I’ve shared about the time my son spent away from us in an adolescent, behavioral, treatment facility. He was receiving help for his adoption trauma. The therapists taught him various techniques to deal with the hole in his heart. The hole which manifested itself in negative behavior.
One technique he learned to do was journaling.
You can THINK a feeling. You can SPEAK a feeling. But if you really want to TOUCH a feeling, you need to WRITE!
Another technique was an affirmation based on this quote.
LORD, Please Help Me Get One More!
There was a third technique he was taught to use whenever he was tempted to engage in negative behavior. This technique is called 10 • 10• 10.
Here’s how it works.
Before you act, ask yourself what will happen in the next 10 seconds if I do this? What will happen in the next 10 minutes? What will happen in the next 10 hours, in the next 10 days, in the next 10 weeks, in the next 10 months or the even the next 10 years? This is a sobering exercise!
When you pause to consider the possible consequences of your actions, chances are good that you might decide not to do it.
I believe this mindset strategy can help us all avoid unnecessary heartache.
Daily Doable: Pull back the reins in your mind. Before you act, consider the possible consequences of your actions. Use the 10 • 10 • 10 technique to explore what might happen in the next 10 seconds, the next 10 minutes, the next 10 hours, and so on.
What do you have to lose but a few seconds or maybe even a few minutes? But what do you have to gain if it prevents you from experiencing the consequences of poor decisions?
