Someone Unsubscribed From My Email List and It Didn’t Ruin My Day!

7 lessons from an unsubscribe survivor.

The other day, someone unsubscribed from my list.

There was no reason given, just an email notification from my autoresponder that I had lost a subscriber. It even included a sad face 🙁

There was a time when I would have taken an unsubscribe personally. But I’ve come to realize 7 important lessons.

1. Not everyone will want to listen to you and that’s okay!

Don’t get me wrong. If my Mom had unsubscribed, I would have been devastated. Mom even shows up to my webinars. Be realistic. It’s impossible for everyone to like you. Even Derek Jeter had one person vote against his HOF induction.

2. Just because someone unsubscribes doesn’t mean they don’t like you.

Don’t take it personally. It’s possible someone is just cleaning out their inbox. I do it from time to time. Do you?

3. You can’t please everyone so don’t try.

Most people want to be liked. There is a temptation to try and please everyone. That’s a recipe for pleasing no one. If you stand for something, someone is going to take issue with you.

4. Unsubscribes will help you will serve your community better.

Not that you take your community for granted, but there is a heightened awareness that this relationship could end at any moment. Serve your community so well that someone wants to stay connected with you.

5. Unsubscribes will make you a more consistent writer.

Perhaps you don’t communicate with your community regularly. That’s a recipe for unsubscribes. Keep the dialogue going.

6. Unsubscribes will make you a better writer.

With a desire to serve your community better and communicate with them consistently, you WILL become a better writer.

7. Unsubscribes will make your list healthier.

Unsubscribes help you reach the people who really want to hear from you. Let me put it this way. Would you rather have a big list with low open rates or a small list with high open rates?

Daily Doable: Do the BEST work you can and ship it. There will be people who LOVE it and people who won’t. And that’s okay.

The next time you get an unsubscribe notification, step back, take a breath and consider it’s probably a good thing.

Someone did unsubscribe from my list and it didn’t ruin my day. That being said, I would LOVE for you to join my community.
